About The Heart and Stroke Foundations of Canada's CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™

Q: What is The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™?

A: The The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ Personal Learning Program allows families, friends and the general public – who most likely would not attend a traditional CPR course – to learn the core skills of CPR in 22 minutes using their own personal kit.

The CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ program uses a unique “watch and do” method where users practice CPR on a personal, inflatable manikin while watching these skills being taught and performed on a DVD. The kit contains everything needed to learn basic CPR, and skills can be learned anywhere, from the comfort of a family home to a large community group setting.

Q: What does the name “CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™” mean?

A: It is the name of the new self-directed learning program developed by the American Heart Association and Laerdal Medical. The program allows users to learn CPR skills anytime and anywhere, from the comfort of a family home to within a large community group, without needing to attend a traditional class.

Q: How long does it take to learn the skills of CPR with CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™?

A: Using the CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ program, the core skills of CPR can be learned in just 22 minutes. The effectiveness of this 22-minute self-directed program is research-proven to be equivalent to a traditional class in teaching core CPR skills.

Q: Why does the Heart and Stroke Foundation promote CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™?

A: CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ was developed to increase CPR knowledge and awareness among the general public. Currently:

  • Almost 80 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home and are witnessed by a family member.
  • The survival rate of victims of sudden cardiac arrest is at a dismal 5 percent, because the vast majority of those witnessing the arrest are people who do not know how to perform CPR. Once the heart stops pumping, seconds count: knowing how to respond to a cardiac arrest can increase the odds of survival and recovery by 30 per cent or more.

CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ was developed specifically to reach those who may not attend CPR courses.

Q: Is using CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ better than taking a traditional CPR course?

A: No, one is not better than the other. Both are effective ways of learning CPR. CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ is an alternative method of learning just the basic skills of CPR. Everyone has different learning styles – some prefer classroom training and feedback from an instructor, while others may not wish to take a hands-on course with other people.

Q: Is there any research to show that this method of teaching CPR is effective?

A: Yes. Research has shown that users of CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ performed the core skills of CPR as well as students in a Heartsaver CPR course. CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ users performed equally well when using the kit on their own or in a facilitated group. CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ has been research-proven to be equivalent to the traditional CPR for Family & Friends program for teaching the core skills of CPR.

Q: What is the difference between CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ and the traditional CPR for Family & Friends program?

A: Both the CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ kit and the traditional CPR for Family & Friends program emphasize the “core skills” of CPR – pushing on the chest (compressions) and breathing for the victim (ventilation). They also teach users/students how to recognize that an emergency exists, check the victim for signs of circulation – breathing, coughing, movement – and call 911.

In a traditional CPR for Family & Friends program, relief of choking and recognizing the signs of heart attack and stroke are included, and child and infant CPR is often covered. The CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ program covers these topics as additional information on the DVD or in the resource booklet. It also includes automated external defibrillation information.

Q: Do I need an instructor to use the CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ kit?

A: Although some users feel more comfortable having an instructor or other person facilitate large groups of CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™  users for the purposes of coaching and assistance, the program does not require a facilitator or instructor. It is intended to be a self-directed tool, with the host of the DVD serving as the “instructor.”

Q: Is CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ a credentialed course?

A: No, users of the CPR Anytime™ Family & Friends™ kit will not receive a course completion card.
